Understanding credit card debt

Most UK cards set the minimum at roughly 1% of the balance plus that month's interest (with a small floor, often £5 or £25). Because the 1% barely exceeds the interest, the balance falls painfully slowly. On a £5,000 balance at the UK average 22.9% APR, the minimum-only route takes about 392 months, over 32 years, and costs around £9,300 in interest, nearly double what you borrowed.

Paying any fixed amount above the minimum breaks this trap dramatically, because the extra goes entirely to principal.
