How Plan 1 repayments work

Repayments depend on income, not on how much you borrowed. Your employer deducts 9% of pay above the £26,900 2026/27 threshold through PAYE (the threshold is applied per pay period, so a month's pay above £2,241.67 triggers a deduction). Self-employed borrowers repay through Self Assessment. Earn below the threshold and you pay nothing, while interest still builds up.

This calculator projects your balance each year until it is cleared or written off after 25 years, so you can see whether you are on course to repay it, how much you repay in total, and whether overpaying would change anything. Compare all the plans side by side on the student loan calculator.

You are on Plan 1 if you took out an undergraduate loan in England or Wales for a course that started before 1 September 2012, or if you studied in Northern Ireland, where every student loan, undergraduate or postgraduate, is Plan 1. Northern Ireland postgraduates therefore do not use the separate Postgraduate Loan plan.

Plan 1 has the lowest repayment threshold of the four undergraduate plans apart from Plan 5, at £26,900 for 2026/27. If you also have a Plan 2 loan, for example from a second degree, you repay 9% of income over the Plan 1 threshold in one combined deduction, which is split between the two loans.

Plan 1 has two write-off rules, depending on when the first loan for your course was paid:

  • On or after 1 September 2006: written off 25 years after the April you were first due to repay.
  • Before 1 September 2006: written off when you reach 65.

Tick the older-loan box above if the second rule applies to you and the projection counts down to your 65th birthday instead.
