How Plan 4 repayments work

Repayments depend on income, not on how much you borrowed. Your employer deducts 9% of pay above the £33,795 2026/27 threshold through PAYE (the threshold is applied per pay period, so a month's pay above £2,816.25 triggers a deduction). Self-employed borrowers repay through Self Assessment. Earn below the threshold and you pay nothing, while interest still builds up.

This calculator projects your balance each year until it is cleared or written off after 30 years, so you can see whether you are on course to repay it, how much you repay in total, and whether overpaying would change anything. Compare all the plans side by side on the student loan calculator.

Plan 4 is the Scottish plan. You are on it if your student loan came from the Student Awards Agency Scotland (SAAS), whether for an undergraduate or a postgraduate course. Scottish postgraduate loans are part of Plan 4, not the separate Postgraduate Loan plan used in England and Wales.

The threshold of £33,795 is the highest of any plan, so on £35,000 you repay just £108.45 a year (£9.04 a month). The same salary on Plan 2 would cost £505.35, and on Plan 5 £900.00. Interest is 4.1% from 1 September 2026 to 31 August 2027, the same rate as Plan 1.

  • First loan for your course paid on or after 1 August 2007: written off 30 years after the April you were first due to repay.
  • First paid before 1 August 2007: written off at 65 or after 30 years, whichever comes first.

Tick the older-loan box above if your loan dates from before 1 August 2007 and the projection uses the earlier of the two dates.
