How Postgraduate Loan repayments work

Repayments depend on income, not on how much you borrowed. Your employer deducts 6% of pay above the £21,000 2026/27 threshold through PAYE (the threshold is applied per pay period, so a month's pay above £1,750.00 triggers a deduction). Self-employed borrowers repay through Self Assessment. Earn below the threshold and you pay nothing, while interest still builds up.

This calculator projects your balance each year until it is cleared or written off after 30 years, so you can see whether you are on course to repay it, how much you repay in total, and whether overpaying would change anything. Compare all the plans side by side on the student loan calculator.

The Postgraduate Loan plan covers master's and doctoral loans from England and Wales. Postgraduate loans from Scotland are part of Plan 4, and from Northern Ireland part of Plan 1, so use those pages instead.

You repay 6% of income over £21,000, a lower rate but a lower threshold than any undergraduate plan. On £35,000 that is £840.00 a year (£70.00 a month).

Two undergraduate plans share a single 9% deduction, but a Postgraduate Loan is repaid on top of your undergraduate loan, at the same time. Your employer takes 6% over £21,000 for the Postgraduate Loan and 9% over your undergraduate threshold, in one combined deduction.

Example: on £35,000 with Plan 2 as well, you pay £840.00 + £505.35 = £1,345.35 a year. Above both thresholds, 15% of each extra pound goes to student loans before income tax and NI. Choose your undergraduate plan above to see your combined deduction.
