How Plan 2 repayments work

Repayments depend on income, not on how much you borrowed. Your employer deducts 9% of pay above the £29,385 2026/27 threshold through PAYE (the threshold is applied per pay period, so a month's pay above £2,448.75 triggers a deduction). Self-employed borrowers repay through Self Assessment. Earn below the threshold and you pay nothing, while interest still builds up.

This calculator projects your balance each year until it is cleared or written off after 30 years, so you can see whether you are on course to repay it, how much you repay in total, and whether overpaying would change anything. Compare all the plans side by side on the student loan calculator.

You are on Plan 2 if you studied an undergraduate course or PGCE in England that started between 1 September 2012 and 31 July 2023, or in Wales that started on or after 1 September 2012. Advanced Learner Loans and Higher Education Short Course Loans in England are also Plan 2. English students starting on or after 1 August 2023 are on Plan 5 instead.

The 2026/27 threshold is £29,385. You repay 9% of everything above it: on £35,000 that is £505.35 a year, or £42.11 a month.

Plan 2 is the only plan where interest depends on what you earn. From 1 September 2026 to 31 August 2027, income up to £29,385 is charged 4.1%, rising on a sliding scale to RPI plus 3% at £52,885. That would be 7.1%, but Plan 2 interest is capped at 6.0% for this period. While you are studying, the RPI plus 3% rate applies (also capped).

On £35,000 your rate is 4.8%. On a £50,000 balance, that is about £2,408 of interest a year against £505.35 of repayments, so the balance keeps growing.
